A Candle for the Ancestors
Today we light the first of our four Advent candles.
This light represents our mothers and fathers in faith from ancient times and distant places, matriarchs and patriarchs who sought God and were found by God, who is not without witnesses in every land and among every people.
As spiritual children of Sarah and Abraham we thank God also for their other children - first the Jews and later the Muslims, who claim with us to live in truth revealed by God.
In this great south land of the Holy Spirit we give thanks for the aboriginal peoples of Australia, whose reverence and care for the land confronts our carelessness and exploitation of God’s creation, and invites us to a shared future in harmony with our sisters and brothers and with all creatures.
In a world of scepticism and credulity, of many faiths and of none, let us cherish the disclosure of God in the Child of Bethlehem and the Christ of the Cross, honouring all who search for meaning and all who seek light.
God of the unexpected moment,
bringing form out of chaos;
separating light from the dark;
breathing life into your human creation;
enliven our hearts
with your expectant Spirit.
Break in on our world
like a flood;
like a thief.
Separate the day of the age to come
from the night of our human darkness:
come in your unexpected hour.
